What are your tips for finding a good urologist?

Share your tips with fellow community members looking for a prostate cancer-specific urologist. If you haven’t found a good one, what challenges have you faced?

  1. I would ask my doctor for a referral. Consider the gender of the doctor also. You want to be comfortable talking too. Research what ever facility you decide to go to.

    1. I live in a small town so there are only so many choices. One office has several urologists, one of whom I saw for many years following a kidney stone attack. He retired, so I moved to a younger doctor who I've seen since my PC diagnosis. He was trained on the DaVinci robot for surgery. In case surgery is a possibility, I would look for someone with plenty of robotic surgery experience.

      1. My PCP referred me to a urologist after a 6.2 PSA who is very good at his profession but a gruff and poor communicator. He yelled at me during a biopsy procedure for not being in the "right" position. I learned this group had an office above the prostate cancer treatment center and very close to my home (I had been driving nearly 20 miles one way in a large city to the other office). So, 1) Ask for a location convenient to you and do your homework re reviews for urologists. I didn't. This group has numerous negative reviews for a variety of reasons that are important to us as patients. Hope this is helpful.

        1. This is extremely helpful, . I'm glad they turned out to have another office so it was pretty easy to switch. One community member mentioned that an inconvenient location can actually discourage you from going for appointments, which really impacts your health. And being yelled at isn't too encouraging either! Thanks for commenting, and I hope things are better with this office. - Nina, ProstateCancer.net Team
