Depression

A forum to discuss depression related to prostate cancer. Depression is not uncommon for those with prostate cancer and can be triggered by the diagnosis, by physical and sexual side effects, and by treatments such as ADT (hormone therapy).

  1. I believe depression is very real event when it comes to prostate cancer patients. And as always guys often like to sweep it under the rug

Our local hospital runs PreOp meetings for men who are about to undergo surgery. A nurse comes in and runs a 60 presentation on what to expect from surgery (before, during and after). The main focus by the men at that point is on the surgery, incontinence and sexual performance - in that order. Although quite often the latter topic is the number 1 priority with the ladies.

As part of the orientation we have a psychologist address the group for a few minutes. It is only on the rarest of occasions where someone will acknowledge that it might be nice to chat.

Typically it is not until later when guys show up at our monthly education group meeting do we hear hints about stress (an often accurate codeword for depression).

We decided to run a special session on stress with a guest psychologist as speaker. Just over 40 men showed up and we spent almost the 90 minutes discussing depression. Great forum topic I suspect. Dennis (prostatecancer.net Team)
