My husband just diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer

Aggressive prostate cancer? #9 on the Gleason score. What? Where do we go from here? Yes we need a CT scan and a bone scan.
I have to say this news isn’t comforting to me, especially since our son died 2 months ago and I’m still reeling from that.
How do I go about helping my husband through this?
Where do we go from here?

  1. , while some talk about being glad to finally have a diagnosis, this is not the news you want to hear. Having lost your son so recently must make this that much more difficult. I can't imagine how much stress you must be dealing with.

I'm sharing some articles that might help as you begin to support and go through this with him. This one talks about being a caregiver to someone newly diagnosed: https://prostatecancer.net/caregiver/newly-diagnosed.
This one talks about reactions to being diagnosed: https://prostatecancer.net/living/reactions-diagnosed.
This one talks about being a spouse or partner: https://prostatecancer.net/caregiver/spouse-partner.

Please reach out whenever you need. I'm happy to share any further info, and it can be helpful to vent too. - Nina, ProstateCancer.net Team

    1. Ninaw, Thank you for the articles! each one quite informative, and thank you for your kind words.

  2. Hi polarman. First, let me say that I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. As Nina stated, your husband's diagnosis coming so soon after is quite a blow and it is completely understandable that you may feel overwhelmed and have many questions. It is great that you have sought out a place where you can get information and support. I want to let you know that many men diagnosed with Gleason 9 prostate cancer are treated successfully. One is our contributor Len, originally diagnosed in May 2013. Here is his bio and story: https://prostatecancer.net/community-advocates/len-smith. In addition, here is his wife Patty's story of being his caregiver and their journey together: https://prostatecancer.net/living/patti-my-husbands-caregiver. As you find out more information and have additional questions, this community will be here to assist the best we can. Wishing both of you the best. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. Good day Richard Faust,
Thank you for your kind words and attached stories of Len and Patti. Inspiring and informative. Our son had diabetes type 1 and 2 which complicated his care he also lost his sight due to the diabetes, he did have a kidney pancreas transplant 8 years ago. The "caregiver" aspect of his care is quite different than I assume will be with my husband. So reading Patti's story has helped a great deal.
      Thank you again

      1. , I'm sure you must be incredibly strong after having supported your son through all this. Caring for your husband will no doubt be difficult in different ways, and I'm glad the articles were helpful! As Richard said, please don't hesitate to reach out as you need. - Nina, ProstateCancer.net Team

    2. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. #9 score is very aggressive in prostate stage. Yes definitely you need CT and bone scan, but first I suggest you to consult with Urologist. I wish your husband get well soon.

      1. Hi ! Thank you for your support. We definitely have to be careful not to give medical advice, so seconding the advice to rely on the urologist for those details. , I know you responded previously via email. Feel free to share here so others can see your post! Thinking of you! - Nina, ProstateCancer.net Team

      2. Yes definitely. I just want to suggest that get in touch with doctor, because doctor can consult you in better way. Thank You!
