Radiation Treatment

My psa first time was 18.9 and second time was 17.8. I was 63 last year when found it. I’m a factor 9 hemophiliac so radiation was my only choice. They give me a hormone treatment (shot in hip) 30 days prior to radiation. Worse shot I ever had. Could hardly walk and no pressure on that hip. I had 42 radiation treatments. First psa was .57 and a month later was .22. They test again in 2 weeks. Hoping and praying it could continues to come down. They had to do biopsy in hospital due to hemophilia. Put me to sleep and I had to stay overnight. I had to get two treatments of plasma also. Going to fight fight fight.

 I didn’t feel it getting the shot. But for next 6 weeks could hardly walk or sit

 I see, <inline-mention user-id="3257635" username="jimmy"/> , the pain hit after the shot. Were you able to sleep? Sounds really tough.

I had to sleep on stomach or left side (shot was in right side of hip). My wife said I had a knot as big as a softball and it felt it. Dr said must have given me the shot in a blood vessel. I took radiation with a guy said he had to get this hormone shot every 4 months the rest of his life. Can always find someone in worse shape

 Wow jimmy - the knot does not sound great, but the other guy's story does put things in perspective. Always something to be thankful for.

I hope your most recent PSA continued to come down, indicating the success of your radiation treatment. Would it be possible for you to share the kind of radiation you received. There is so much information available and from my experience each journey is unique. Know which type of radiation you had could be helpful to other readers. Keep up the fight! Thank you!

 Not really sure what you mean by which type of radiation I had. I couldn’t get the seed implants due to my hemophilia and I couldn’t have surgery for same reason. I guess it was called external radiation. I had 42 treatments where you lay on your back and they slid me in this machine that rotates and each treatment lasted about ten minutes. Never felt anything. I hope this helps.

 Thanks for your reply, Jimmy. From your description it sounds like you had a form of photon radiation in the External-Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) category. Within that category there is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), CyperKnife (Stereostatic Radiosurgery), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and others. There's also proton radiation within this category. I'm no expert, but I've been doing my homework in preparation for shifting from Active Surveillance to a more invasive therapy.
