Going off Luperon

PSA scres stable at .02 for about a year. Oncologist thinks I might be able to go off Lupron with approval of urologist. My concern is if the PSA goes back up, can I get back on Lupron with positive results or am I taking

  1. As you have a team looking after your case, it might be better to let them resolve any concerns that might arise. I think it is a matter of choice what thoughts we let take up our present moments. In your case, I think it should be a constant celebration of the consistently low PSA. If at all the PSA shows some sign of rising, I am sure the doctors would have medicines for dealing with that. There is a much wider net nowadays to cater for such situations. So, my suggestion would be to allocate only a short amount of time each day for focusing on the P Ca treatment and after thinking out important issues that relate to treatment, one needs to leave it to medical science.

    1. Following a prostatectomy in 2013 my PSA dropped to 0.02 for 2 years then it started to rise . In 2108 I underwent radiation and LUPRON. Following that treatment my PSA dropped to 0.02 - the lowest level my lab can detect. Said another way there is no evidence of disease (NED) and as of this writing we are just about 2 months away from 2023. 😃

It is VERY easy to allow concerns over the "possibility" of a returning cancer or a rising PSA scores to set up camp in the back of our heads As humans we have a natural tendency when stressed to first focus the possibility of a negative outcome.

It is possible to reframe that focus if you want to and choose to envision a positive future. No matter how you look at it ... worry will not change a thing. Here is a quote I found helpful in looking the future.....

"Don’t deny the pain of today and don’t deny the hope of the future
You live life to the fullest when you live a balanced life
You do yourself no favors by being afraid of being happy"

We all make a personal decisions every day on how to live the rest of our lives. For me focusing on a positive outcome is more reassuring. If my cancer returns I know deep down there are a lot of options to address it.

To your question "Can i get back on LUPRON?" ... I am aware of several men in our support group who have successfully gone back on LUPRON and report low Post PSA scores. Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

      1. Hi . First, great to hear that your PSA is stable. What type of treatment did you have for your cancer? I ask because I'm curious if your PSA is undetectable/less than 0.02 after a prostatectomy or if you had radiation and the 0.02 is the level it has come down to. Concerning going off the Lupron, every case is different and I can't comment on your specifics (for your safety, we cannot give medical advice over the internet), but I can tell you that intermittent androgen deprivation therapy has become a fairly standard and success part of treatment (see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5772839/ and https://www.cancer.gov/types/prostate/prostate-hormone-therapy-fact-sheet#what-is-intermittent-adt), so going back to the therapy if needed should not be an issue. Wishing you the best. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)
