Misconceptions About Prostrate Cancer Surgery

After 15 years of active surveillance I was diagnosed with Stage 2, Gleason 7, at age 60. I read all I could find from Mayo Clinic/Johns Hopkins, and met with guys that were diagnosed. I decided to have nerve sparing radical prostatectomy surgery at Mayo.

A lot of my friends said not to have surgery as it was a 'very slow progressing' cancer. This had came on in the 12 months since my last check-up. I wasn't getting younger so why put off the inevitable when I am at an age right now where recovery would be a lot faster and easier? I'm doing fine now with minimal side effects.

  1. Everyone has to decide for themselves what they feel is the best course of treatment. I think that doing detailed research, especially with the reputable sources you mentioned, and meeting with others who could share their experiences are excellent ways to help you in the decision process.
