Prostate surgery

Hello, I had prostate surgery about 4 years ago and didn’t do the kegels like I was told or didn’t feel like I was doing them correctly. Still have very little bladder control. Will doing the kegels have a positive effect this long after the surgery?

  1. Hi thanks for reaching out. We have a ton of articles about kegel exercises in our community from pelvic health physical therapists. In each article they mention to always ask your doctor first before starting this. I am attaching this article here that explains how to do them correctly, but please reach out to your doctor first: https://prostatecancer.net/living/kegels-101. Jill, prostatecancer.net team

    1. While we do not offer on line medical advice here I can offer you some personal insights surrounding my experience with on going Kegels - One of our presenting MD's told our support group he had observed that prior performing the sling procedure to help men with leaking almost all of the men had weak pelvic muscles.

His suggestion to our group was to do 10 contractions 4 times a day and to keep up the routine after surgery. I continue to do Kegles several times a day since my surgery in 2013. Yes I do notice a difference if i slack off for a few days. Suggest you discuss it with your urologist to see what he/she thinks is best in your particular situation .
