Radeation

Canot do hormone treatment heart risk how effective is radeation alone.

  1. Hi . It may not make any difference in your case, but has anyone mentioned Orgovyx (relugolix)? I ask because, as discussed in this article from the National Cancer Institute, it has a considerably better safety profile in relation to heart issues: https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2021/fda-relugolix-prostate-cancer-androgen-deprivation-therapy#:~:text=Relugolix%20is%20known%20as%20a,that%20patients%20take%20every%20day.
Concerning radiation alone, the effectiveness and suitability as a treatment really depends on the nature of the prostate cancer, such as grade and risk level. Your doctor would need to help determine if this treatment fits your profile. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. I asked the head of radiology at a major hospital if radiation alone was adequate to deal with my cancer. she said very little research had been done, most of it in the 1960's. Her opinion in my case (4 or 5 small lesions, encapsulated) was that rediation would work but the cancer might come back after 8 or 10 years. but since I am 82 and might live into my 90's, and since prostate cancer is slow moving they could deal with it again if it reappears. This was simply her opinion and my urologist didn't agree. i still don't know what to do. i don't want to get fat, grow huge breasts, be irritable, gain weight etc., which i've heard is part of taking that drug which they call a "castration dru." Certainly not what I wanted to hear! please let me know what you find out. I really don't know what to do.

      1. When I went for a consult with an Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist and a Urological Surgeon, they all told me the same thing. In my case (MY CASE), the cure and survival rates were the exact same whether I had surgery or stand alone radiation No chemo, no drugs. Again, this is for my case. Everyone is different,

You need to get a second, third or fourth opinion in order to make an informed decision.

        YMMV

      2. It is a good idea to look at side effects from the various treatments. I treat the word "cure" with some caution and focus on quality of life. In my case I went for radiation plus ADT and am now 3 years in remission at age 78. I am as healthy as men my age who have never experienced prostate cancer, so this "cure" has come with excellent quality of life.

    2. You should get several opinions from medical providers and perhaps research at pubmed.gov.

It will depend on your situation. I was advised to do 6 months of ADT along with radiation, but a Radiation Oncologist from Oregon Health and Science University said that I really did not need the ADT for my Gleason (3+4) 7, Stage 2b cancer. I wish I'd listened to him and not had ADT.
