Radiation

I was scheduled for radiation but was not able to empty my bladder, now I have a surgury scheduled a TURP. Has anyone had this experiance?

  1. When I had radiation, I needed to have an empty bowel and a Full bladder. Your treatment routine may be different, but it was surprising that you said you needed to have an empty bladder.

If you can’t empty your bladder regardless of radiation treatment, and medication doesn’t give adequate relief, TURP is a common solution. My journey started 17 years ago with TURP which also led to being closely monitored over the years for PC. The TURP wasn’t fun but after about a week everything was back to normal and I’ve maintained decent flow since.

    1. For radiation treatment, you are asked to have a full bladder. That said, the radiation tech advised me that you do not need to be bursting at the seams. I learned after a while to have a glass of water or cup of coffee 15 minutes before treatment. If you are not urinating, the TURP is often the way to proceed. There are 2 ways to do the procedure: one is done with a laser, and the other is done surgically. The latter, I understand, provides a pathologist with more material to examine for evidence of cancer. You will want to ask your MD which might be better in your situation. Dennis G
