Radiation with ADT

Had a psa of 27 in the fall of 2022. Followed up with a biopsy that gave me a Gleason score of 9. By the time I got to a research hospital in Ohio in December my spa wa up to 84. I started ADT immediately with Lipton and Casodex. Had a CT scan which showed a fair amount of metastasis and then a PSMA pet scan to get more details. Most mets were in the pelvic region with one small met on my sternum. As you can imagine I was pretty freaked out by the stage 4 diagnosis and choose to go with aggressive treatment even though I am 78. I had 23 sessions of radiation. I had the same issue with trying to go into the sessions with a full bladder. I had a Foley catheter inserted at first diagnosis as I could no longer pass urine at all. I chose to use the Foley with a plug rather than a bag. Two days in a row I blew the plug out before they cound start the radiation sessions. Glad they had an extra set of scrubs around. I returned home to Hawaii following the completion of the radiation and started with a medical oncologist. He has continued with the Lipton and cahnged out the casodex for Erleada, one of the new androgen inhibitors. I have now had a psa of 0.02 for 5 months. I actually feel pretty good with the except of low energy. I had the Turp procedure 3 weeks ago and am now catheter free for the first time in 16 months. No major leakage problems yet, knock on wood. All in all from a very scary start things are pretty much back to normal now so I encourage everyone to not give up hope. I did lots of research throughout this process and had a major say in all medical decisions which I urge all to do.

  1. Good to hear you are peeing better!
    Good luck

    1. Hi thank you for sharing your story with us and the important reminder of being an advocate for yourself. You must be so relieved that things are pretty much back to normal for you. Being catheter free for the first time in 16 months must be such a game changer for you. We appreciate you being so open with us. You have been through a lot, I am glad you kept a positive mindset, although I am sure this was really difficult at times. Jill, prostatecancer.net team
