Urinary retention

I’ve recently started having problems voiding fully, and quickly get the feeling I need to pee again. This scared me into going to my gp, who ran blood tests and saw that my previous PSA in January was slightly elevated at 2,2. sent to urologist, did an DRE and an ultrasound which came back normal. Prostate volume 24 ml. New psa 2,0. Never abstained from sex/exercise before testing as I didn’t know you were supposed to. My problem now is that it seems my gp and the urologist have laid this to rest, no signs of malignancy - but I still have the problems with urination. I’m also worried that there could be growth not seen on ultrasound or felt on DRE. I’ve also understood that I have quite high PSAD for my age, should I push for MRI/cystoscopy? This urination issue is very scary/frustrating.

  1. Are your docs treating the urinary symptions? Many guys respond well with finasteride or dutasteride. I waited too long and the urine retention damaged my kidneys. TURP finally solved my problem and the kidneys recovered decent function but the residual damage will always be there. 17 years later, I was diagnosed with early stage PC and zapped it with SBRT. The hidden blessing in all this is that the initial problem triggered very active surveillance which caught the cancer early and made treatment relatively easy.

If your docs are not treating your urinary symptoms, get new docs. Don’t let this grow into a bigger problem.

    1. Hi I can understand why you would be concerned. I think it is great that you were proactive and went to see your gp about it and then went to an urologist. Since you are still having issues, I would definitely recommend you sharing your concerns with your doctor. Many of our members will seek out another opinion and push for further testing when they are not comfortable with the response from their doctor. Please keep us posted on what you find out. I hope you can get the medical care you deserve. Jill (Team Member)
