Exercise while on Lupron and Radiation Therapy

My prostate cancer journey

I am 77 years old, first told I had prostate cancer in April of 2021, PSA 8.2, it was a Gleason 7 but nonaggressive, decided to do active surveillance. August of 2022 another biopsy and still Geason 7 PSA 7.2 but it was now aggressive so after several second opinions, I received a 6-month injection of Lupron Nov. 15, 2022, and started radiation on Jan. 18th, 2023.

Radiation treatment for psoriasis

Originally Radiation Oncologist was going to do the radiation with 5 sessions, I told him I intended to keep riding my bicycle during the treatments and wanted the fewest side effects as possible. The RO then changed it to 20 sessions of radiation, he said he would turn down the intensity and so it would be 20 sessions. Back in November I was riding my bicycle 150+ miles a week, but I could feel the strength in my legs going away as the Lupron started doing its job and could see and feel the weight gain.

Radiation side effects

I slowly started riding fewer miles each week to where I was down to 30 miles a week on the last week of radiation and the first 2 weeks after the radiation was complete. It is now just over 6 months since the Lupron injection, PSA 2 weeks ago was <.1 and Testosterone was 9. After the initial side effects of the radiation quickly wore off my cycling miles has increased, I am now up to riding 125 miles a week. I still do not have full strength and the weight is still here (20+lbs). I was told by the RO that I should gain my strength back and lose the weight as I get my testosterone back over the next 3 to 4 months. The radiation very tolerable and really just cause fatigue for a few weeks. The Lupron side effects are horrible, and I am really happy at least for now do not require another Lupron injection. I won't get into all of the Lupron side effects but if you look up the list, I think I have had all of them. Anyway, that's my story, thanks for reading.
