My Wife, My Rock

Partnership and prostate cancer

My wife Liz has been incredibly, amazingly supportive in my prostate cancer journey. In early discussions with my urologist and radiation oncologist, she came with me and took copious notes that we could refer to when we were home (it's amazing how much you forget between the doctor's office and home). When I was going through treatment, she kept my spirits buoyed, and in those moments when it all seemed overwhelming (fueled in part, I'm sure, by my hormone therapy), she offered comfort when needed and space when I just wanted to wallow in my feelings for a while. My last two PSAs were undetectable, and she shared in my triumph over that.

Our marriage

Our marriage was the first for both of us at a rather advanced age (I was 57, she's 10 years younger), and I think waiting to find the right partner is part of why we fit together so well. I know I would have made it through this journey if I was still single, but it wouldn't have been nearly as powerful or encouraging as it is with Liz. If you're lucky enough to have a partner as strong and supportive, I know you'll get through it. If you're single, find a friend, a co-worker, a family member who is strong and empathetic. It's a hard road, but it can be a lot less so when you're not going it alone.
