What are the treatments?

That is something that your Urologist should go over with you. My Gleason score was 9 - Grade 5. My PSA prior to treatment was 20.83 - I was started on bicalutamide on August 4th of this year for two weeks prior to my first Lupron injection, which I will received quarterly for the next two years. Two weeks after the Lupron injection I was started on abiraterone, on September 5th which I will take for the next two years. I have seen my Oncologist every two weeks after starting the abiraterone to monitor PSA and testosterone levels. My last follow up was on November 14th - my PSA level is now 0.01 or undetectable and my testosterone level is less than 10 (started at 300). The Radiological Oncologist wants to start radiation treatments next month - for 5 1/2 weeks and I am skeptical based on side effects. The current side effects I am dealing with are hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue and constipation along with a loss of my libido. My Oncologist stated if I didn't complete the radiation treatments that I would have to remain on abiraterone for the rest of my life (I am 65) - if I complete the radiation treatments they feel I can be "cured". My doctors are at Northwestern in Chicago. Go on line and do some research, there are many options, watchful waiting if the cancer is not aggressive, surgery, oral medications, radiation treatments, etc., and there are more treatments in clinical trials. You have to be your own advocate and do what is best for you. My Oncologist asked me what my goal was when we started, and I said I wanted the most aggressive treatment possible. That was before any side effects came to the forefront, now, I am not so sure. Search this website and ask questions. Good luck with everything.

I was diagnosed back in 2010 with a Gleason of 4 + 4 agressive Adenocarcinoma. Scared the hell out of me. Well, since I was 'too fat for surgery' back then (thank God!) I did some agressive research and found Alternatives that never seem to be explained here. I did NO TRADITIONAL treatments and am now Alive and Well; doctor says my blood work is better than his! I have a web site and written books about how/what I did but cannot reveal them here do to the rabid censorship. Oh, I never went back to that iditot oncologist!

Here is a good website to compare odds of cure for the major treatment paths. You have to determine your stage, low risk, intermediate, or high risk (risk of recurrence). So if you are intermediate, pull up the intermediate chart and you can see the odds of 10-20 yr survival, etc. based on the treatment you pick.

It is best viewed on computer or just print it on paper. Not so viewable on phone.
To make the graphs easier to read, i drew a dot on the endpoints of the elipses, and then drew a line through the dots. This turns the elipses into lines.
Also be aware the the graphs don’t show any salvage radiation benefit. This would boost the surgery odds up a bit.
Also beware, this is a very dysfunctional industry from my view. Loads of bad info mixed in with the good info. Same with the docs. Some of them are more dangerous than the cancer.
