Blood in urine

I finished my proton radiation treatment for my stage 4 prostate cancer in May 2020, and my hormone therapy continues quarterly til the end this year.
I have had no blood in my urine until three weeks ago. It has been bright red with blood clots.
Has anyone experienced this and does anyone have any comments? I will be meeting with my urologist next week.

  1. Are you undergoing other treatment that might lead to blood in your urine? What was your schedule on proton therapy?

    1. I had 39 daily Proton Radiation treatments that finished May of last year with no blood in my urine until three weeks ago. I will finish quarterly Eligard shots in October of this year. That will be two years of hormone shots. That all I have had. Thanks.

      1. With blood clots showing up I would be one who would call my MD in advance and offering a heads up kind of message. Radiation of any kind is serious and can cause irritation. Small clots may be seen as normal while larger may indicate a developing issue - Always best to speak up. As men we often tend do hold back when explaining what is may be an issue - Only your MD will know for sure

    2. Hi . It's certainly understandable that this sudden blood in the urine would be disconcerting. I found this article on urinary problems following radiation (note: it is not specific to proton therapy) which notes that this and other issues "may occur several years after completing radiation:" https://www.prostatecancerdecision.org/PDFs/Guides_English/UrineProblemsAfterRadiationSept2016.pdf. That said, as noted, any new symptom should be brought to the attention of one's doctor. Hoping you get some answers and relief soon. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

      1. Thanks- the article was very helpful. I will be discussing this with my urologist next week.

        1. Good to hear - now is not the time to be bashful or macho with any of this
