Chemotherapy experience

My oncologist is giving up on keytruda and is now recommending chemotherapy for my stage IV prostate cancer.

My general impression of chemotherapy is if the cancer doesn't kill you the chemo will.

I would appreciate hearing from those who have undergone chemotherapy and what their experience has been.

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak to the impact of chemotherapy treatment, but I can tell you that they have changed quite a bit in recent years. Many of them are more targeted and the side effects are more manageable. Many are now even administered in pill form. In addition, when administered in conjunction with immunotherapy, which Keytruda is, they have been found to be more effective and manageable. This article discusses a study that found just this effect: https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2022/01/in-cancer-treatment-quality-of-life-matters-more-and-more/. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences. Wishing you the best and know that this community is here for you. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. I've seen the effects of chemo in my family members. There are meds to help patients deal with some of those effects, but there are still side effects. But I look at my husband and my daughter, both who went through rigid chemo treatments, and they're still here and living happy full lives post-chemo. I think the chemo had much to do with their still being here. I'm waiting for my biopsy results to see if chemo is next for me. I certainly don't want to have that treatment but will do everything to live.
