At 59 years old, a blood draw revealed elevated PSA July 2023, 4+3=7, PSA of 7. X-ray, MRI, Biopsy followed. I began studying the disease and treatment options. My brother-in-law (68 y.o) had just finished his regimen of external beam radiation and raved about it. He said he had very little side effects. He also told me he knew of several people close to him that had "the surgery" and they all regretted it. Even so, after my own due diligence, I opted to have it surgically removed. I made this choice based on side effects and my age. Both options have side effects, but it seemed to me that side effects from surgery got better over time, while radiation started out better, then got worse over time. Also, once (eternal beam) radiation was done, surgery didn't look like a viable option if I needed follow up treatment. So,....here I sit, 10 days post surgery. They used a single port robotic surgery, I have a single 5" incision at my waist. The surgery went smooth, and I haven't had any pain to speak of. I was uncomfortable at times but I wouldn't call it pain. The worst part of the experience was the catheter, which was removed after 7 days. Currently, my only issue is a little leakage (drops), and frequent urination, like I can't hold a lot in my bladder. Partly due to the fact that they told me to drink A LOT of water. They took out the prostate, nerves, seminal vesicles, all of which were involved. I will have ED the rest of my life, from what I understand. For those considering treatment options; Do your research, make your decision based on your life. Once you make the decision, don't waste time second guessing yourself. I wish you all the greatest success in your journey.
