COLOGUARD results 9 months after proton beam therapy
CommunityMember3883ae
I was due for my 10 year colonoscopy. The Dr told me not to do it within 2 years of proton therapy. So I did thr Cologuard. It came back with a reading of abnormal cells. Could this be caused by the Proton therapy?

I agree with you Jill. I would also be interested in this. I am trying to wrap my head around the mechanism that would allow proton therapy to influence the finding of colon cancer DNA on the Cologuard test. However, even though I am a medical professional, this is a research question best answered by the researchers in the field at Cologuard or other major research sites.

I talked to my Proton radiology Dr. and he said that my colon will be sloughing cells for up to 2 years post treatment. He said these cells are radiation damaged and will show up as abnormal under a cologauard or colonscopy test.
