PC Treatment after TURP

Had successful TURP over 16 years ago with minimal side effects. My stream has decreased over time but I seem to manage better than most of my buddies. I’m 68. During my recent treatment discussion with my urologist he stated that the old TURP surgery could complicate radiation treatments and lead to narrowing of the urethra. He is a world renowned surgeon but was not selling surgery, just a frank discussion. I would appreciate hearing experiences of anyone who has had radiation treatment after TURP. How long after, what type of radiation and side effects. Thanks in advance!

  1. We all react differently to treatments and that makes it impossible for even the best MDs to accurately predict what if any complications any given patient is likely to experience. I underwent 40 EBRT some 5 years after a prostatectomy and did not experience a narrowing of the urethra. That was 6 years ago. Recently also underwent an additional 5 treatments of high-intensity radiation in the same general area and so far no issues.

At this juncture, I would ask your MD what follow-up procedures might be used if you experience some contraction in the future. With a lot of this stuff, I often take a deep breath and wait to see what happens while knowing in advance what my future options might look like. Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    1. Thanks Dennis. Seeing the radiation oncologist tomorrow. I think that knowing about possible follow-up treatments while trying to not get too far ahead of myself is good advice.

      1. Did you do the urine flow and urine left in bladder afterwards test? If so how much residual urine was measured by ultra sound?
Radiation is a good way to go (sometimes the only option) but does tighten up the urine flow.

        1. Thanks. I’ve had urine retention measured with ultrasound and it was a good level, not great. Talked through this with the radiology oncologist and he thought the old TURP wasn’t an issue but did say reduced flow was a likely side effect at least for a while. I’ve decided to go with a series of 5 SBRT treatments.
