HIFU experience from others

Hey All
64 and recently diagnosed with Stage 1/Gleason6 confined to prostate. Urologist here in Spokane WA says I am good candidate and he has done over 200 procedures. Curious for others experience with this procedure. Happy that Medicare pays for this now!

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak on the HIFU treatment, but we have had a number of people write on it and you can find them here:

Hope these are helpful and that others chime in with their experiences. Please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and to ask further questions. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. Thanks for the follow up. I qualify for the procedure and will likely get it done this summer, after I go on Medicare in May. Just found out from my urologist that the procedure is definitely covered as of Jan 1, 2023 and a local hospital in my town of Spokane WA has the equipment.

      1. Hi Kelly,
Sounds like your urologist is a Hifu man?
In any case, my opinion is that urologists are usually biased towards what procedure they do when they should be biased towards curing their cancer patient.
Not sure, but think Hifu doesn’t have alot of data behind it as a cure.
        I would suggest..
1.) find maybe a medical oncologist (a few specialize in PCa). They are not so biased. Many men have a team, with the MO as the boss.
2.) look up Dr. Grimm. He spent years compiling data on all major PCa treatments and their curative value. Go to the website. There are three charts, one each for low risk, intermediate risk, and high risk (risk of PCa recurrence). Study them, learn them by heart.
On the charts it sounds like you maybe are low or intermediate. You can look up on internet to help figure out your category

        1. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. My Urologist is a leading urological oncologist in my area and I have done quite a bit of research on him so feel pretty comfortable. But to your point, many options if indeed my Prolaris testing comes back in my favor. We have to advocate for ourselves and I am trying to do that and really appreciate you reaching out.
