side effects from radiation when I also have multiple sclerosis

I had surgery and now have a biochemical recurrence. The radiation oncologist is recommending salvage radiation, however, I also have MS and am concerned about side effects. Does anyone have any related experience?

  1. Hi . Your concerns are certainly understandable when dealing with an autoimmune condition like MS and facing something like radiation. I can't personally speak to this issue, but I do want to share with you that we have a sister-site for MS at https://multiplesclerosis.net/. I know there are multiple people there who have written about experiences with radiation and you can also ask questions in the Forum section there. I also know that it is important to get the specialists to coordinate care (my wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with juvenile RA at age two, 46 years ago). Have you had a chance to speak to your neurologist about the potential for radiation therapy? Hoping you can get some answers and the treatment you need soon. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. I also have (long term) MS and prostate cancer! Ihave been urinary incontinent for years. To add insullt to injury I also have diabetes! I have had external beam radiation 6 years ago and have undetectable PSA reading! My oncologist had warned me that my incontinence would likely get worse with radiation which did not really concern me, as I was already using disposable dlapers 24 hours a day. Some or many of the symptoms of side
effects of radiation therapy are very ovelapping symptoms of MS! So itis very hard to distinguing which is causing what!! I am very lucky that my MS is remitting and relapsing and I am able to manage it as I do at 81 years old, with the help of my woderful loving wife

      1. Hi . First, let me say that it is great to hear your PSA is undetectable. Second, we know it can be difficult to monitor and control different conditions, especially when the symptoms overlap. I do want to note that we have a sister-site for MS at https://multiplesclerosis.net/. There you will find the same level of information and support for that condition as you find here for PCa.
