Hormone therapy for prostate cancer reoccurence

I had my prostate removed because of prostate cancer in 2013. I'm having a reoccurence and after a couple of radiation treatments at specific spots I'm now on hormone therapy. Only a small area of cancerous cells now show up on a Fluciclovine PET scan.
I got a one month dose of degerelix and my psa shot back down to 0.04. My second shot was a six month dose of eligard. I got that two weeks ago. The Urologist wants me to also take an oral anti-androgen with that. I'm not so sure about that. Since my psa is so low and only a very small amount of localized cancer was found, I'm not so sure I want to do that yet.
1. If I'm getting a hormone shot and also taking a drug, how do I know the specific effect of either drug?
2. I'd think having both would increase my side-effects which so far are few and not bad.
3. The cost of the drugs are exorbitant.

Any thoughts on the choice between having one or two types of therapy? I'm 75 and otherwise in good health.

  1. I don't have any advice to share, but thanks for posting as I am 64, and will likely find myself in the same boat by February, my doctor has begun discussing the same kind of "salvage" therapy with me. I'm not worried so much about the radiation, however the hormone therapy is another story....

    1. scilipoj. Not sure about your choice of treatments. I'd probably follow your doctors recommended path, if you have some concerns a second opinion will help I think. Had a doc once tell me we dont know how to cure this stuff-I'm just going to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you. He did-it worked so far.

As far as cost, if its hurting talk to the manufacturer-many of them have programs to help you get by without bankrupting yourself. Good luck. DanF, moderator, ProstateCancer.net.
