Proton Therapy

My PSA has been steadily rising. Prostate MRI has been scheduled. Obviously, nervous.

I have been reading about Proton Therapy and am very intrigued. I am pretty sure my health insurance won't cover it (if I need it of course). Does any one have an idea on out of pocket cost for Proton Therapy?

Thanks in advance.

  1. At Loma Linda in Southern California 5 years ago it was around $60,000

    1. Thanks so much. I hope it hasn't gone up too much😀 Really appreciate your response.

      1. Hi . Don't hesitate to check on whether your insurance might cover proton therapy and see if your doctor might be willing to fight for it. Proton therapy was first approved by the FDA in 2001, so it can no longer be considered experimental. As this page from MD Anderson Cancer Center notes "Proton therapy is covered in the United States by Medicare and many insurance providers:" https://www.mdanderson.org/patients-family/diagnosis-treatment/care-centers-clinics/proton-therapy-center/frequently-asked-questions.html#question13. As you said, hopefully it will not be necessary and it is important to examine all options in reference to your particular case. Please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing. 2. Richard, I will definitely try. However, I have heard that insurance companies are getting very aggressive in denying coverage for proton therapy.
