Spine surgery

Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer has caused several tumors, but the biggest is pressing on my spinal column. I’m scheduled next week to have back surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible by taking out the vertebrae, clearing the tumor, reinforcing collapsed vertebrae with screws and putting it back in place. The pain is said to be bad( worse than now) for up to 6 months. Radiation, provenge, Lupron and xtandi have slowed progression of tumors but not enough. Four weeks after surgery I will start ten cycles of docetacyl. Has anyone experienced this adventure or anything similar and lived to tell about it?
Scary stuff!

  1. Hi this sounds incredibly painful for you. I can't even imagine how scary this must be for you. It sounds like it is going to be tough post-op for some time but I do hope the surgery will give you a much better quality of life. Although not exactly the same, I did find a story from one of our members who did have spine surgery: https://prostatecancer.net/living/incontinence-backpacking. Please keep us posted on how you are doing. Sending you strength and I hope your surgery goes very smoothly for you. Jill (Team Member)

    1. I had radiation on one spinal lesion causing pain. It stopped the pain immediately.
