Surgery or not

58 years old. Had my annual checkup and PSA was a 10.3, 6 weeks later it was a 9.7. a month later it was 13.7. I had an MRI, and subsequent MRI guided biopsy to confirm on my birthday Prostate cancer present and confined to the prostate. I was contemplating ablation and after meeting with a surgeon who does NOT do any ablation procedures, he recommended the prostate to be removed because of my age and it not outside the gland. He also said Focal Ablation and TULSA Pro was a "sham" procedure. I was stunned to say the least as I thought that was an option for me. After more research it looks like I will have the surgery to remove and del with the side effects as everyone else has. all the info is confusing when Dr's diminish one procedure or another as a sham even though they are performed every day on numerous people. I am curious if anyone else heard this about ablation techniques or Tulsa Pro type being a "sham" and not effective at all? This opinion was from John Hopkins BTW.

  1. by the way, my Gleason score was a 4+3 with a targeted MRI 3T biopsy last month with perineural invasion present.

    1. : If only everyone in the medical field agreed on what was the best approsch Unfortunately we are not in that enviroment. After dealing with an aggressive Gleason 9 since 2012 my personal approach is ... do your research and then make a decision based on what feels right in your situation.

In the end I belive we make the best decsions when we follow our intuition, move forward and never question if the call was right or look back with regret. When my Gleason 9 PCa returned for the 3d time after surgery, radiation and ADT one medical team group told me the only way to go was to be on Lupron again.

Somewhere deep down that did not feel right. I went to a well known national cancer treatment center in New Haven Conneccticut and was offered a totally different approach that felt right. I followed that path.

Trust your heart and do what feel best with the information you have at hand. 👍 Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM0

      1. Hey Dennis, appreciate your insight, you are right when you say go with your gut feeling. I think another opinion or approach will help. Thank you.
