Why would Pet Scan not detect prostate cancer

60 old with Stage 3 Gleason 7 (4+3) recently went through Pet Scan and no cancer detected. Although my current PSA is at 1.0 and has been doubling post robotic surgery and ebrt radiation. Now being told my next step is going through hormone therapy

  1. Hi unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult for the PET to pick up low PSA levels. Take a look at this article, I hope this is helpful: https://prostatecancer.net/clinical/psma-imaging-scan. Jill, prostatecancer.net team

    1. thanks. I will post the outcome of my upcoming appointment

  2. I also had a PCa return post robotic and 5 years later EBRT. The latter treatment was combined with hormone therapy.

In my case a recent 2023 PMSA PET scan picked up a spot on my hip bone. One hospital suggested I go on LUPRON to control the spread . At the same time a national cancer center strongly suggested stereotactic radiation for the identified spot and I not go on LUPRON. I chose the latter.

I am not offering advice here . Rather I am simply telling you what happened in my case. You could check with your MD to determine the best course of action for you. Perhaps you might decide to (A) Go on LUPRON etc to slow the cancer spread down or (B) discuss the wisdom/practicality of a future follow up PMSA PET which at some point may identify the hidden cancer(s) and offer you the possibly to treat it with a form of radiation. None of this is easy. All the best ..... Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    1. ... Hi there ...My post-op/ post radiation PSA had remained at 0.02 for several years. It jumped to 0.34 in May of 2023 .....30 days later it was 0.48 at the time of the Pet scan.
A follow up test following my radiation treatment at Smilow late in Sept of 23 now reads 0.1 🎉 and apparently it will go down further. 🤞 Sure hope that info helps . Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    2. thanks

  3. I was basically turned down by my radiation oncologist for another test

    1. well, I had appointment with Medical Oncologist and he suggested Lupron and another drug 2 weeks before to minimize side effects. Since he hinted at waiting till my PSA rises close to my initial diagnoses of 7.0 and then having another Pet scan, I decided to hold off another month (to have another PSA test) while I do more research and try to figure out what to do. I will likely start Lupron in month but concerned if I will still be able to work and function

    2. thanks for the update. I can understand your concern with the side effects of Lupron. I hope if you do start this, it goes smoothly for you. I am glad you are doing more research and keeping yourself informed. Jill, prostatecancer.net team
