Bed Wetting

I am happily married , 72 years old and a survivor of 18 years after radical prostatectomy . I had additional beam radiation after 5 years from the surgery because my PSA started to very slowly rise. I have experienced light leaks but need to wear depends while doing a vigorous activity. All very survivable. Suddenly, 5 months ago , I started sporadic bed wetting. Waking up wet but still had to empty the bladder. I went to an urologist and had a cystoscopy showing no scar tissue and a working sphincter. His suggestion—- I need an AUS ( Artificial sphincter system). No other alternatives were suggested. I really didn’t want to so easily submit to surgery. I found penis clamps as an alternative. Does anyone have any experience with the AUS , penis clamps or any other help?

  1. I am aware of 2 men my support group who have had a similar issue with leakage and underwent surgery to have a bladder sling installed.

Apparently the sling takes pressure off your system and leakage stops. Both men are very pleased with the outcome. You may want to ask your urologist for some guidance as it relates to your situation. It also may be a good idea to check with another urologist for second opinion.

    1. I really appreciate your reply. The urologist and a second one advise against the sling since I had a prostatectomy and later radiation. they both though the tissue would be too weak to hold the sling. any other input from your group? How do i find a group to join?

      1. Hi . I can't personally speak to this issue, but I want to share with you this article on the use of the sling after a prostatectomy, both with and without radiation: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28971786/. The researchers conclude: "The majority of patients undergoing the AdVance sling procedure for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence saw a significant reduction in pad use, and were overall satisfied in both radiated and non-radiated groups at short and long term follow up. However, improvements were greater in the non-radiated groups and diminished with time." Wishing you the best. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    2. Many thanks !!
