Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

I had a Robotic Prostatectomy 3 months ago. I not only had my prostate gland remove but the lymph nodes which is close to the prostate gland. I didn't have nerve sparing/saving done in my procedure. I reeived my first post PSA last week which was <0.01ng.mL undectable. A value of 0.1ng/mL would be considered essentaily zero. I did get the PSA I wanted but I haven't had an erection since surgery. The Doctor did start me on Cialis but I have plenty of question for my surgery team on my first follow up appointment. I haven't been able to get an erection after surgery. What I am really asking is there anyone in this community that had a prostatectomy with all those procedures involved? The surgeon stated he have other erection procedures he can suggest on my first visit. But theirs like hearing of someone personal experience. Thanks,

Ray

  1. Hi Ray (). I can't personally speak to your situation, but until others chime in I just want to share with you that we have quite a number of articles on ED and community members discussing it. Here is a search of our archive on the topic for you to peruse at your convenience: https://prostatecancer.net/search?s=erecticle%20dysfunction. In particular, here is Will discussing dealing with it: https://prostatecancer.net/living/dealing-dysfunction. I also want to add that there are more options now than ever and, hopefully, some of this information will help in your discussion with your doctor. Know that there are plenty of men here who get it. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. Thank you,

  2. HI I had prostatectomy 12 years ago and I suffer from mild incontinence (leak when sexually excited!) and ED, more due to my age rather than the surgery. Having examined all the options we decided to use vacuum pumps and have been using them very successfully, with benefits we did not expect. If you want more information please visit proatatecanceuk.net (you will have to register if not already a member), go to 'conversations' and then under
'Re-establishing Sex life'. My posts explains how we incorporate a vacuum pump in our love making and also our review of pumps and the best buys. You do not have to give up sex!

    1. Thank you,

  3. CommunityMember954587 First of all... Congrats on your post-op PSA numbers. I also underwent surgery and prostate removal and for a while I was ok . I was on viagra and things were rising to the occasion within 2 weeks of my catheter removal.. That said I did benefit from nerve sparing surgery.

At this point you may want ask about any number of options - pumps, injections, change of drug protocol, sound wave treatments, exercise, muse (a penile suppository) to name a few .

My situation changed 5 years later when I needed to undergo 8 weeks of radiation and 6 months of hormone therapy after surgery. Candidly erections became an significant issue but after 50 years of marriage we as a couple adjusted.

Now that my wife has passed I have reentered the dating world and am looking into the potential for a penile implant to address erection issues along with any related leaking during sexual engagements.

I hope this info will help you to be able to ask more questions of your medical team - who will offer the best advice given your personal situation. Dennis (ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    1. Thank you,

  4. I had the surgery 12 years ago and for various reasons we decided to use vacuum pumps which has been a great success for us. Have a look at prostatecanceruk.net website under 'Conservations' sub heading 'Re-establishing Sex Life'. You may find it useful and encouraging. Good luck.
