Fish oil taking - any correlation with fish oil and PC?

A little info about myself. I had aqublation surgery on my prostate about 1.5 years ago. While in hospital I developed uti and infection with slew of antibiotics. Was in hospital over 6 days with catheter in me to drain out blood. Good thing I was in hospital because after release was fine. Developed anemia while in hospital and took iron supplements for 30 days and was fine. I also developed epididmytis of right side of testical and had to take antibiotic to clear that out. When I was done with antibiotic and infection cleared had follow up with my urologist with PSA done and was a 2 and considered good for my age. Anyways my main question is I saw on Internet back in 2013 that it was indicated that men that take fish oil run the risk of getting PC, then saw on prostate cancer.net and a few other sites that the study done in 2013 was flawed and fish oil was ok to take still? Does this still remain true? I take a high end good fish oil by Nordic naturals usually 2 a day, which is 2.1 grams. Thank you

  1. Hi . You have certainly been through a lot and it is understandable that you would want to check out any supplements before adding them to your regimen. You are correct that there was a 2013 study, often referred to as the Brasky Study, which suggested that fish oil supplements could increase the risk of prostate cancer. You are also correct that it almost immediately came under scrutiny (see this 2014 paper for example). I don't know if this is the article from our site that you are referring to, but our editorial team addressed the flaws in the Brasky Study and subsequent research that did not find an increased risk: https://prostatecancer.net/clinical/omega-3-fish-oil. Now there is even research from 2024 finding that fish oil may slow prostate cancer growth: https://www.uclahealth.org/news/release/low-omega-6-omega-3-rich-diet-and-fish-oil-may-slow-prostate. Of course, it is still important to speak with your doctor before taking new supplements, plus your doctor may have additional information. Wishing you the best. Richard (Team Member)
