Pain urinating during radiation treatment

I have just started my first radiation treatment on Wednesday today is Sunday when I urinate the first couple days it wasn’t that bad yesterday it’s getting to almost to be unbearable I’m supposed to be drinking lots of water I’m afraid to drink anything because I don’t want to have to urinate it hurts so bad and usually when I urinate I usually have a bowel movement, he reminds me of not having Flomax and you have to go and you can’t go and then you start taking Flomax and all is better again I was waiting to call on Monday to my doctor to see if there’s anything that I can do is anybody else have this problem and what did they do for you the pain is excruciating I am up almost every hour on the hour at night having to go

  1. I also had some burning when i first started radiation and while it felt counter intuitive the more water I drank the better i was. Trick for me was drinking more water during the day and not after 6 PM.

If I was in your situation I would not wait and would be calling the MD office today. Be very surprised if there was not a Back up MD on call for emergencies especially for patients undergoing a new treatment . I find that guys tend to wait too long before speaking up. Do let us know. 1. Thanks Dennis for replying I did call today they got right back to me the doctor asked me all the questions and said he would call me back he called me back in about 20 minutes and suggested that he put me on a stronger steroid I was already on prednisone he told me to take one at noon and if I’m not feeling better to take the second one by dinner time and he only gave me enough for a couple days because I will be going back in on Wednesday he wants to see me then unless I’m still having trouble to get a hold of me I did read somewhere about drinking more water might help I don’t know whether to try it or not so wait and see what the steroids do I wanna drink water so bad because they tell you to drink . He also wants me to get a urine test in the morning he’s worried about infection which I have read about that but I think it’s too early for me to have infection he said it’s probably the swelling of the bladder because of the radiation are those for the swelling in the prostate I’m not sure which it was if this don’t work there talking catheter we’ll see what happens thanks again Digger

      1. So glad you made the call. Guys often tend to hold off for too long before making a call.
I developed a urinary tract infection following radiation. What you described sure reminded me of what I encountered. Who knows it may have been developing for some time. After my urine test I was prescribed an antibiotic and "Bingo" things got back to normal very quickly.

The good news with all of this is tey get result pretty quickly with those tests if I recall

Best of luck and do let us know how you made out... Dennis(ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    2. Dennis how long from your radiation treatment until you had the infection I had mine on Wednesday and I felt it the next couple days it seem like I got it happen too fast to be an infection but I may be wrong I hope I’m wrong I’d rather have it be an infection and I have to go to a catheter the steroids seem to be working and not having as much trouble going now it’s I’m not gonna lot is the thing and I’m trying to drink more like the one guy I read he had the same problem burning problem and he drank more water he said and his was OK I had A urine test taken this morning at 9 o’clock and they still haven’t got the results I just called up there about 330 and I’m still waiting I thought it should’ve been done by now because he was kind of want me to go in right away but I guess it just takes that much longer for the lab work so hopefully I’ll hear something even yet tonight specially if there’s an infection and I don’t think he starts till five or so maybe he’ll still have time to find out so he can give me a prescription thanks for the come back I’ll let you know what else happens thanks Digger

      1. I had the same thing happen only 5 treatments in, starting having painful urination. My doctor said it was a little early to have that side effect, but some do have this happen early on. He said my BPH that I had on top of the cancer could be the issue. As my prostate was twice the size it should had been before treatment. It is good you called and got followed up. Prescribed Advil and Phenazopyridine. Better this evening. I hope the pain gets better.
