Prostate diagnosis and treatment

My doctor did s biopsy on my prostate and found 3 spots out of12 with cancer. Two were just 1% and one was 28%.He.wants me to do nothing but just watch this.He says the treatment will make things worse and by me being 72 years old just monitoring now is the way to go. Do i need another opinion?

  1. This is an excellent question and I honestly don't have an answer. My father got the diagnosis at age 72. He will be 90 on 3/6/23. This is just my opinion and mine alone. I would get a 2nd opinion just to be 100% sure. I'm sure someone will be along soon to give you a little more input. Thanks for sharing and being a part of this community. Diane (Team Member)

    1. what if any treatment did he have, and tell him to be blessed

  2. I believe he did the proton therapy. Thanks for the kind words. I am on my way to see him now. He is 90 today.

    1. Hi . Did your doctor give you a Gleason score for your cancer? The Gleason score is an assessment of the cancer cells to determine how likely the cancer is to spread (see: https://prostatecancer.net/diagnosis/gleason-score). Did your doctor use the term "active surveillance" or "watchful waiting?" These terms might describe what your doctor is recommending and this article goes into more detail: https://prostatecancer.net/treatment/active-surveillance.
Concerning a second opinion, prostate cancer often has multiple options and a second opinion can be useful in getting a fuller picture of the options. This article from our editorial team goes into further discussion on the role of second opinions: https://prostatecancer.net/living/second-opinion. Your deserve a complete explanation of your diagnosis and why exactly doctors are recommending a specific course of action.
I hope this information is helpful and please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and to ask further questions. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)
