PSA Roller Coaster

So, a few months ago I had a routine exam and my PSA came in at 4.3. My provider wanted me to check it again in a couple of weeks and it came in at 42.1. This was very concerning and I could tell my provider was concerned as well. She was able to get me in to a Urologist's office in short order. When I was there, they had me check my PSA and it came back at 8.5. Since it went down, they said to wait another couple of weeks and get it checked. I did and now it was 5.3. Again since it was trending down, they said to wait a month and get it checked which was the other day. This time it was 3.09 and back in the normal range for my age. So they said that we are going to monitor it going forward and to come back in 5 months. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  1. My brother had a similar experience in that he is being monitored after a decreasing PSA. I don't know his exact PSA numbers as he's very private about his PSA and health, but I know he was relieved when the PSA reading went down and he was told the doctors would need only to keep an eye on his levels at this time. I hope your levels continue to decrease and remain low.

    1. Hi . I'm sure a PSA fluctuating so wildly is a little disconcerting. While I can't personally speak on this, I did find this research article that looked at fluctuations and found that "Patients with wide PSA fluctuations, although baseline PSA levels are high, might have a low risk of diagnosis with prostate cancer:" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4752088/. It is good that your doctors plan on staying on top of this and the researchers note that "serial PSA measurements could be an option." Please feel free, if you like, to keep us posted on how things are going. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)
