Treatment options

Hello All,

I was recently diagnosed with Prostate cancer. I'm 44 years old and otherwise in great shape. Gleason 3 + 4 in 8 of 32 cores. It's all located on one side of the gland.

My urologist and Oncologist both recommend removal. Pretty standard of care and well documented. I'm not opposed to this treatment but would prefer to not have the accompanied side effects, if possible.

I'm exploring all my options and I'm most likely going to do IRE (NanoKnife) with Dr. Gary Onik as my first option. I've read a ton on it and have had a few in depth conversations with Dr. Onik about the procedure.

Has anyone had this procedure done and care to comment on it? I'm looking for whatever first hand experience I can get. Side effects, did it work for you, did your PSA drop back to normal levels, etc.

Thanks!

  1. Hi . I can't claim any experience with Nanoknife, but I do know that, in spite of it being a pretty new treatment for prostate cancer, it has been utilized for a while with other cancers, particular pancreatic. If you have spoken with Dr. Onik, it sounds as if you are communicating with one of the best possible sources, as he seems to have as much experience with Nanoknife as anyone (I find it interesting that he teaches in the engineering department at Carnegie Mellon). Hopefully anyone who has had experience with this treatment will chime in. Wishing you the best and please feel free to keep us posted. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. If the cancer returns can you still remove the prostate after having the nanoknife treatment

    2. thanks for reaching out. There are varying factors and we are all different, so that would be a great question for your doctor as they would know your personal situation the best. However, I did find an interesting article that I hope you find helpful. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6464181/. Jill, prostatecancer.net team

  2. Same here no experience with Nanoknife. I will say based on my personal experiences things are different after treatment - how we react depends on your body and on the MD treating you. Time and patience are most likely your best options for now

    1. Nanoknife was offered to me as treatment ,did anyone have this procedure, if so how did it go, it sounds promising. jimj

      1. Where are you located? I'm in Hawaii and looking for a treatment center.

        1. while I hope our community member gets back to you, do you have a routine practitioner that you see? They hopefully could help with a recommendation. Jill, prostatecancer.net team
