Urination Issues

Recently completed 45 low dose treatments. Following treatment number 40 I was no longer able to urinate on my own. Had to go to emergency room to have catheter inserted. Belief is the prostate has become enlarged. Eight weeks now after completing treatment, I am still not able to urinate on my own so catheter is being changed every few weeks. My urologist states this could last for up to 6 months. At that time a procedure known as Turp could be performed. Has anyone else experienced this condition? Any info on your approach that was done to resolve would be appreciated.

  1. Hi I am glad you reached out. I am sending over a couple stories from our members with their experience with a catheter: https://prostatecancer.net/living/post-surgery-thoughts and https://prostatecancer.net/stories/constipation-horror. I hope this is helpful for you. Jill (Team Member)

    1. Be very very very careful what you do.
Your radiated tissues will be what they call brittle and delicate. Resist the urge to let them go up and cut up there. There are cases of men that have urologist go up and try to trim a stricture and things cascade badly and the guy ends up on catheter for years or even gets a through the abdomen bladder port (urinary tract no longer viable).
And Urologists LOVE to cut. Get a good MO that specializes in prostate cancer on your team (Mark Scholz).
There are men that are taught to self cath. Maybe for you?
This prob is common. It can take 18 months for your urinary tract to re-stabilize.
Turp sounds crazy to me after radiation.
Id say don’t panic, stick w catheter for now, research about what i posted. Once rad is done the inflammation will start to subside.
I find urologists generally to be like bulls.

      1. Thank you very much for that reply. Best regards.
