very stressed about a PSA spike

I've had mild prostate issues for a while but nothing too concerning with normal PSA readings for years. I then had a sudden bout of prostate irritation, and the GP gave me medication which has worked amazingly to alleviate the issues. At that time when the irritation was at its peak, I had a blood test and that result showed a spike in my PSA from 1.0 to 5.4, now I am horribly stressed as my father died from prostate cancer.

  1. Hi . Your concerns about the rise in PSA is understandable, particularly given the family history. I do want to note that a number of things related to your prostate issue to the treatment could potentially raise the PSA. This article discusses the test and what can cause elevation: https://prostatecancer.net/diagnosis/psa-test. That said, vigilant follow up with another PSA test, once those other things that could be a cause of increase subside is important. Has your doctor discussed a retest? If at that point elevation was still present, next steps, such as an MRI, could be discussed. Hope this information is helpful and please feel free to keep us posted on how things are going. 2. Leo, have a serious phone discussion with your urologist about your lab results. No visit needed. Discuss what stage you are at, your PSA increase over time with a DRE. Do not procrastinate!
My biopsy was just over 5 years ago... fast forward to this year and I am now called "cancer free." We are certainly all not the same, so get that important discussion and consult done, make the plan, and get that plan done.

  3. yes a stressful time ahead but get in to see the doctor again ASAP and get the ball rolling. you will not regret it. early bird gets the worm.
