A bit unorthodox

I Just came across this site when searching for forums on incontinence so I thought I would give it a go,, I am a 68 year old male who has had Prostate cancer for about five years + now and am on the “wait and see” program. I am moderately overweight but not obese. I first found out that I had Prostate cancer when I started having “dribbles” every now and then and went to my family doctor and so goes the story from there. In my case I was lucky enough to catch it early and have a very low Gleason score, but, my Prostate is very large and they say I have BPH on top of that. When I started using incontinence products I started with the typical “male pads” which was disastrous for I never had the same amount of a void at the same time so they would always leak and also my “male anatomy” seems to sit quite a bit lower towards my groin area so it would leak down my legs… Here’s the real twist to my solution, my Urologist is a female and one day when I was talking to her about this issue here female nurse practitioner over heard me and said “ well why don’t you just use women’s products as they are geared for much more absorption down lower” and so after my Doctor and I sort of looked at her with a stunned look on our faces she then sat down a started telling me about how many other men were having the same issues. So that was some time ago but here is what I wear in the day time and then at night that I came up with shortly after that conversation,,,, in the day time I wear a “pull up” (doesn’t matter male or female as it is mainly an over flow preventer. I then place a heavy rated “female” pad where I needed it topped off with a heavy booster pad. This has more than enough absorbing power for even a full void. I then cover this with a pair of Abena fixation pants and finally a pair of women’s high waisted cotton/spandex postpartum underwear so that it all sits very snuggly into my groin area. As for nighttime I wear the pull-ups with a booster pad and fixation pants,,, so it seams complicated but it’s not,,, it is also very comfortable,,,
Are there other men who use as many female products for their incontinence???

  1. Hi . Thanks for sharing what has worked for you. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. How is the active surveillance going? Do you mind if I ask what tests they are doing for monitoring, such as MRI or PSMA PET?
Also, have doctors discusses any treatments for the incontinence, such as TURP (see: https://prostatecancer.net/treatment/turp) or medications like Flomax, or Kegel exercises (see: https://prostatecancer.net/living/kegels-101). Just curious if anything else has helped at all. Best, Richard (Team Member)

  2. Hi Richard,
I run a PSA test every 3months and I have had an MRI every 12-14 months, I also have had two biopsies over the last 5+ years. I have been prescribed Tamsulosin .8 mg daily along with 5mg Tadalafil daily (which I contribute to a PSA score between 6.5 - 7.2 on the average over the last few years as I was on Tadalafil well before any other treatment. The incontinence can be good at times it’s very little or severe with major unexpected voids so I just keep doing what I am doing to handle things. I am hoping to have it removed in the near future as it hasn’t been viable up to this time as I’ve had to take care of my wife after her major surgery and that has been a 2+ year recovery but she is just about back on her feet so I can get my issues taken care of next. My Urologist has suggested adding another drug to try help with the incontinence but I forget what the name is. I am quite comfortable with my life style at this moment and as you said “necessity is the mother of invention” so I also have no ego issues at all with using whatever product works for me being male or female. Also about the Kegels I do not have any issues with those muscles as I spent 45 years on ladders as an electrician so they are just fine,,, it is as my Doctor says a very very large prostate,,,
