Clots?

Hi, 51,newly diagnosed stage 4 advanced prostate cancer. Biopsy and cystoscope confirmed cancer has spread to the mouth of my bladder and possibly a lymph node. Started casodex and my first shot of lupron, feeling like crap. I've been wearing a foley because of urine retention for almost 3 months now. Immediately after my cystoscope I began bleeding heavily and throwing HUGE blood clots for two months. I'm talking 5 inch earthworm size clots almost daily, sometimes 3 times a day. Dr said it was normal. Thankfully the bleeding has stopped, that's the background and here's the question. For the last 3 weeks and specifically after starting casodex, I've been throwing rather large chunks of white tissue in my foley bag. Some red blood clots but with actual meaty tissue attached, sometimes chunks of what looks like mashed potatoes. Nobody can tell me what it is, all they say is it's probably sediment. It is NOT sediment. Do cancerous tumors disintegrate? Could that be what's passing thru my catheter? Sorry for the misspellings and rambling. Thanks.

  1. Hi . It is certainly understandable that you would be anxious about the material in the catheter bag and no one giving you answers. From what I've been able to find there are a number of potential causes for this issue and this article goes into more detail: https://www.healthcentral.com/article/passing-tissue-clot-urinating. Considering that some of the options require treatment, don't hesitate to press for answers or seek a second opinion. Hoping you get some answers and relief soon. Feel free to keep us posted on how things are going. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

    1. In our pre-OP class the men are told that clots can often be passed after treatment (surgery ) - As long as the clots are not blocking the drain tube it is ok. They are told some red tint and odd discharges can occur but are ok but .... the men are urged to call if they see the foley bag looking more like tomato soup in color - Do not know if that info helps - As always keep your MD's up to date.
