Diagnosed yesterday

57 years old and received my Prostate Cancer diagnosis yesterday.

I got checked after having to urinate several times during the night and also starting to have a delayed start to urinating.

DRE found no nodules but did detect an enlarged Prostate. PSA has been bouncing over the last six months from 7.4 to 4.3 to 5.5.

Trans Perineal Biopsy last week and out of 12 cores 5 were positive Most were 5-10% but one was 60%.

Gleason is 3+3 = 6 and cancer is Stage 1.

Samples have been sent for Genomic Testing to further validate the scores/stage but my Dr feels pretty confident that it will validate.

Plan is Active Surveillance for now. Visit Dr in 6 Mos for DRE and PSA check and then an MRI and if it looks ok another Biopsy in a year.

Just wondering for any of you that have chosen Active Surveillance if you’ve faced any changes in the situation and ended up with surgery or treatment? I realize every case is different and things can change at anytime but I also realize status can be maintained for many years.

I’m actually extraordinarily calm and not worried or scared. I’ve decided to use this as a wake up call and make some changes in the way I approach life every day. I’m a workaholic and I deal with quite a bit of stress at work and my goal is to find the good in things going forward.

Thanks for letting me write this as I begin a whole new chapter of my life.

  1. My husband was 55 years old when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer with a psa of almost 100. Because his psa was so high, waiting and watching was not an option. But like you, we decided to make some changes in our lives to help promote health and healing and appreciate the good things in life. I think if we control what we can, have a positive attitude and reduce our stress, we're doing a lot to fight the battle and win. He's 14 years past initial diagnosis and while his cancer still exists, I truly believe the changes we made have contributed to his continuing to live a good life. Grab your new chapter and enjoy.
