Dr Mulhall's penis rehabilitation protocol

Any feedback or experiences on using Dr Mulhall's penis rehabilitation regimen? ie. specific sequence of using a PDE5 inhibitor (Viagra, Cialis) and injections immediately following radical prostatectomy?

  1. The MD's here suggest that men seriously consider using a PDE5 inhibitor immediately after a prostatectomy and encourage the use of a pump to increase blood flow. They also suggest doing it immediately for the best outcome following nerve sparing surgery. On the surface Mulhall's suggestion appears to make sense as it is another means to create erections on a more frequent or as needed basis.

One concern strikes me - Depending on the frequency of repeated injections can such a practice cause tissue damage over time and lead to other issues? We all know some men who can get overly enthusiastic with some protocols . I am reminded of a guy in our support group who figured if 10 Kegel contractions 4 x a day were recommended then doing over 200 would be better. That did not work out well he discovered.

Would be interesting to know what the impact (if any) repeated injections might produce and see if anyone has thoughts or experiences with the topic. Dennis (ProstateCancer.net TEAM)

    1. The regimen works to various degrees for different men so it is best to have a long conversation with your medical provider. Much information from doctors is based on statistics so you will want information that is based on where you fall in the statistical norm or tails.

Per discussion on a number of forums, some men do not react to PDE5 inhibitors and some find that these have a limited lifetime of use. The experience with injections also varies.

You can find a number of studies on pubmed.gov as well as Prostate Cancer Research Institute videos.

By the way, Dr. Mulhall may have updated his information on the effects of radiation and ADT on sexual function, but what I've seen so far does not reflect my personal experience.
