Exercise following a radical prostatectomy

I am 5 weeks out from my radical prostatectomy. My doctor wants me to wait until I am 8 weeks post surgery to do any exercising save walking. I want to know if there are any exercises I could do now or in the next few weeks. I have had trouble finding resources online for exercising after a radical prostatectomy.

  1. I am 10 weeks out and I stayed with walking through 9 weeks when I started lifting weights again. But, I also had a hernia repair and 8 weeks was recommended. My surgeon stated in their directions not to lift more than 20 lbs for 6 weeks. I walked as I could tolerate it. 10 days after surgery I got the bright idea that going to the mailbox was a good thing (1.5 mile round trip and a couple of hills). Yeah, not so much. I was wiped out. So I spent the next couple of weeks walking more around the house and property as I healed. By week 6 I went out and did 5 miles. Another couple of weeks and I'll be back on a bicycle. I've definitely learned patience these past couple of months.

    1. Thank you for sharing, . It's good to hear that you dialed back your activity to properly heal. I hope your patience has been paying off any you're feeling good about the future. -Samuel, Team member

  2. Hi . Your doctor may have had specific reasons for recommending 8 weeks. The recommended wait seems to be inconsistent/depend on the source. This article from Mount Sinai recommends that "you should wait three to four weeks before beginning any heavy exercise, such as jogging, weight lifting, and bicycle riding:" https://www.mountsinai.org/care/urology/services/robotic-surgery/da-vinci/after-surgery. Hopefully your doctor can provide further guidance. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)
