What are your tips for finding a good oncologist?

Share your tips with fellow community members looking for an oncologist! If you haven’t found a good one, what challenges have you faced?

  1. I would talk with other men who have the disease to see what they have been though. Also, do your research. Get a doctor that is honest and up-front with you and not treat you as a number.

    1. If there's a prostate cancer support group (or even a cancer support group that may have few men with prostate cancer), that's an excellent place to get a referral. I hear many men who have had or are having a bad experience with their current oncologist. I go to two support groups (neither prostate cancer specific) and I recommended my oncologist to him as he was just having a horrible time with his oncologist. I saw him a few meetings later and he gave me a hug and then his first words to me were: "Doug, I went to your oncologist. She walks. On. Water!" I think she does too and I was so happy that he was so he was pleased with her. So number one, if you can, start with recommendations from men in local support group if you can.

    2. I found my oncologist (and I can't emphasize enough how awesome she is) similiarly. My GP's nurse's husband had had GU cancer, his in the liver instead of the prostate, and she was absolutely amendment that I see her husband's oncologist. He does't take patients until they're in the system and only if they need surgery, so he recommended to me both my urologist and oncologist.
