How do you cope with the side effects of prostate cancer treatment?

Many factors can lead to side effects, including the type of treatment you've had, other health care conditions, risk factors, and age. We want to know the worst side effect(s) for you and how you cope.

  1. always tired , no energy , complete loss of sex , my whole life has changed and not for the better

    1. It sure as hell feel's like I am.

    2. Welcome to life on Lupron. I went in with an agenda on the sex side so that was okay, but the side effect that I most had trouble dealing with was the emotions.

My wife and I have no close friends, do not attend church and have no nearby family. It's just the two of us.

About 3 months into my 6 months on Lupron I couldn't handle the emotions any more and went to a psychologist to unload old baggage that might have been making it worse. That was an interesting journey.

Other men go to psychiatrists to get medication for the depression. I tried anti depressants a long time before and all it did was kill my libido. Now on Lupron I had no libido so the meds weren't likely to do anything.

Many of us join support groups through the cancer center, others find a new connection with their Maker or join community groups. I became a peer support volunteer and began spending hours trying to help other men through forums like this one.

I also became a member of the Reluctant Brotherhood, a group of men across the country that meets on Zoom on Wednesdays. We go through some heavy stuff, but more often than not, we are laughing our asses off by the end of the meeting. I say heavy stuff as we have men ranging from trying to decide their first move to one or two who are not sure about tomorrow. It's about our hearts and heads and there is not much that is off bounds.

  2. I became severely depressed after realizing I would never have sex again (endangering my marriage) and having to wear adult diapers 24/7. I also had to stop working due to the terrible incontinence.

    1. I was lucky. The major side effect for me was very frequent urination. Other than that, i never noticed much difference. Sex is different but not impossible in my situation. Find a physician that will be honest with you. Better to be alive and different than dead. My brother and I went through this at the same time. Talking helped quite a bit.

      1. I did not have side effects.

        1. What mode of treatment did you receive?
