Questions on radiation effects after cancer returned

My husband had a prostatectomy 6 years ago, the cancer has returned, He did have a PSMA scan, and it does not appear to have spread to bones. They are setting up schedule for 7 weeks of radiation, 35 sessions total. He has to do a colonscopy first as he’s having some issues ( if the cancer had spread there, wouldn’t it have shown up on the PMSA?). My question is what kind of side effects will he feel? How long after the 7 weeks before he regains strength and energy? What can I do to help ?

  1. I will be reading the replies you get because my husband will likely have radiation soon if his numbers keep trending up.

    1. and I am so glad you are a part of our community. It is so nice to see caretakers here looking for support and information. I can understand your concerns with the side effects of radiation. While I hope our community members respond here with their personal experiences, I am sending over this forum discussion so you can see our members comments in here: https://prostatecancer.net/forums/worries-about-adt-and-radiation-side-effects. I am also sending you over a story of one of the caregivers in our community: https://prostatecancer.net/living/patti-my-husbands-caregiver. And I also wanted to share this article about the PSMA test: https://prostatecancer.net/treatment/psma-targeted-pet-imaging. Unfortunately everyone responds differently to radiation, some more painful than others. I really hope your husband has minimal side effects. Please reach out if there is anything else we can help you with and I hope your husband(s) feel ok. Jill, prostatecancer.net team
