Radiation effect on my pets

I am going through prostate treatment alone.my dogs are family and I need their support.we eat together and sleep in the same bed. They have their spots and don't sleep tight up against me.I had my prostate seeded on Thursday and I am worried about being around them.they are larger dogs.these babies are the only support I have

  1. Hi . I completely get why you are concerned about the potential impact of the brachytherapy seeds on your dogs. I found this study that looked at the impact of permanent brachytherapy on each member of the household, including pets: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12788183/. The authors concluded that "Radiation exposure to family members from a patient receiving a permanent prostate brachytherapy implant with radioactive (125)I or (103)Pd is very low and well below the limits recommended by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Radiation exposure to members of a patient's family or to the public should not be a deterrent to undergoing this procedure." That said, I have seen other sites express concerns about such things as pets being on a man's lap for a period after the seeds are implanted. There may be issues particular to your case, including the types of seeds and I need to note that we are not medical professionals, so it is important to ask your doctors for their thoughts on this issue. I really want to make sure your dogs are safe. Wishing you the best and please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing. Richard (Team Member)
