Can I have a prostatectomy after brachytherapy?

I had brachytherapy in Oct 2018. After my PSA was .065, within a year and a half it's now 5.3 (after several PSA tests).

My question is: according to my Dr. I can not have a prostatectomy, he advise cryotherapy or hormone therapy. After reading about cryotherapy I would rather have a prostatectomy. Is this possible?

I have found conflicting articles on this matter. I still have a chance that it might go down for the next PSA test, however, I want to do my research before I get to that point. (Hope for the best prepare for the worst!) Any advice?

Thanks so much

  1. Hi rockycan. Sorry to hear about the rising PSA, but it is good that you are doing your research and best to learn your options should action become necessary. According to this article from the Mayo Clinic on prostate brachytherapy, surgery to remove the prostate or salvage prostatectomy is a possible treatment for rising PSA: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/prostate-brachytherapy/about/pac-20384949. You may want to ask your doctor why he believes this isn't possible in your case and/or seek a second opinion. Wishing you the best and please feel free, if you like, to keep us posted on how you are doing. Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)
