What items helped during and after radiation?

My dad has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer metastasized to the pelvic bone. He’s started radiation and will be on hormone blockers. I know radiation can make skin really sensitive so was looking for any recommendations for ultra-soft clothing or other items we can get him now that might help during and after treatment.

  1. Hi . First, let me say that it is great that your father has you researching and advocating on his behalf. Second, I'm happy to tell you skin issues associated with radiation therapy has really not been an issue for members of the community. In fact, I've rarely seen it mentioned and we have had no articles or Forum posts on the topic. In this article Jim mentions that he was told to expect it, but that it never happened: https://prostatecancer.net/living/treatment-decisions-surgery-radiotherapy. I do want to share with you this article from the National Cancer Institute on skin and nail changes during cancer treatment: https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/side-effects/skin-nail-changes. Perhaps most helpful might be this article from the American Academy of Dermatology: https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/skin-cancer/types/common/melanoma/radiation-care.
In addition, I want to share with you this article from our editorial team on some of the internal effects, such as radiation enteritis to be aware of: https://prostatecancer.net/clinical/radiation-enteritis. Hope this information is helpful and please don't hesitate to ask further questions. Wishing you and your father the best. Richard (Team Member)
