What do you wish others knew about prostate cancer?

  1. I was told how lucky I was that it went into remission, but most people don't know it takes 5 years with many psa tests before I'm considered cured. Please don't say I'm lucky until you know what I've delt with and what I still have io endure in the future.

    1. I totally agree with your sentiment, and I actually think the word “cured” is misleading. Five years is not an indication that all is well. I have had two recurrences, one at 5 years and one after another 6.5 years. But still doing well although I am doing ADT for another 17 months!

    2. Hi . I was just writing to someone in a different thread on this topic that "In part, I blame the medical community. People hear about the high survival rate, but almost nothing about the fact that about 33,000 men in America die annually from PCa or about the side effects that can cause significant life changes or the stress of testing for recurrence and the overall impact of all of the above." There is no "good" or "lucky" cancer. Know that people here get it. Best, Richard (Team Member)

  2. You can have stage 4 cancer, be doing long term ADT, feel awful part of the time and great part of the time. Additionally, most people in this situation think about their cancer situation often, and it really wears you down.

    1. Hi . Absolutely, neither the best day or the worst day tell the story - it is the totality of the situation. Also, as you note, the emotional aspects take a backseat to the physical and it is all intertwined. How are you currently doing? Best, Richard (Team Member)

  3. Side effects can be extremely debilitating and painful. They usually last 9 months but can be permanent.

    1. After 11 months the severe headaches and aching muscles started to get better, maybe about 10% of what they were. However, I still have hot and cold sweat issues. Thank you for asking.

    2. Hi Ed (). Glad to hear things are improving. We have had men discuss the effects of the six month shot lasting significantly longer (just one example). Hope you continue to see improvement. Best, Richard (Team Member)

  4. Thanks all. I have. Even on Orgovyx and abiraterone with a dash of prednisone for 9 out of 24 months! I am adapting well and just working through the fatigue part. And I am an optimist so I expect the side effects to go away sometime after I am done!
