John Marshall- my brother in law

John Marshall passed away two years ago from prostate cancer. His first PSA was when he was 55 and it was 410!! I cannot believe that his primary care physician didn’t start the PSA test prior to 55! He had several other diseases that he had during his life and his doctor should have ordered PSA tests starting at age 50! He lasted about 6 months after his diagnosis. Since his diagnosis and my diagnosis of prostate cancer, I am telling anyone I know or talk to that they need to advocate for themselves and demand their doctor start PSA testing by the age of 45!!

  1. Hi . Thank you for your willingness to share this story and so sorry for your family's loss. Following the change in PSA recommendations by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) against testing there was a marked increase in advanced prostate cancer cases. Dennis wrote about this issue here: https://prostatecancer.net/living/uspstf-recommendations-psa-test. Thankfully the recommendations have been relaxed some (although not enough) and news of the increases in severe cases have hit the mainstream (see: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/02/health/prostate-cancer-rise-reduced-screening.html). I know that you have been looking at treatments and one of the things that gives you more options is that your cancer was caught as early as it was. Hopefully people like you getting the message out will allow more men to be diagnosed early. Best, Richard (Team Member)
