PSA

Is 16.07 PSA level considered high? See posts with guys saying score of .04 or 5.0 considered high.
Hubby meets with urologist tomorrow. Just curious if we are understanding PSA levels. Thank you.

  1. Hi . First, let me say that it is great that your husband has your support and help in advocating on his behalf and seeking out a place to get information and support. I don't know if you and your husband were able to get answers from the urologist today, but I want to share with you this article from our editorial team that gives an overview of the PSA: https://prostatecancer.net/diagnosis/psa-test. You'll note that often in initial, pre-treatment timeframe anything above a 4.0 is often considered high, but there are multiple factors that can impact the PSA level (note: a 0.04 would only be potentially noteworthy in looking for a biochemical recurrence in someone who has already had prostate cancer treatment). Hoping this information is helpful and if the appointment raised additional questions, please don't hesitate to ask. This community is here for both you and your husband. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. Thank you. Hubby saw an NP in Urology department today. She said that yes, his PSA is very high. I asked if he had BPH if that would give the high PSA level. She said she didn’t think so. However, she consulted with one of the doctors, and they looked at a CT scan he had done last year. Sid his prostate is very enlarged, and that is probably causing his high PSA. He is going to have a PHI lab tests next week. He is also scheduled for an MRI end of June. If it is BPH, can he just cancel the MRI, especially if the lab tests come back normal?

      1. Having personally faced and treated for prostate cancer(PCa) several times, I tend to err on the side of additional testing and scans. PCa often shows no symptoms early on, and testing may not always be 100% in pinpointing issues.

Establishing a baseline and history often offers look-back benefits down the road. It's really all about personal choice. Dennis (Patient Leader)

    2. Hubby had PHi testing yesterday. His PHI score is 89.2. I guess this means he has a 50/50 chance of having cancer, right? Also, pretty likely he will be referred for a biopsy?

      1. Hi . The Prostate Health Index (PHI) is considered a more useful test in predicting potential prostate cancer. That said, I need to note that we are not medical professionals and, for the safety of community members, cannot provide diagnostic interpretations of results or next steps, as each case is different. I do want to share with you this page from the Mayo Clinic on the PHI test, which may provide some useful information for guiding further discussions with your husband's doctor on next steps. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    3. Thank you. I appreciate this information.

      1. Hi . I realized that the Mayo Clinic site did not post, so here it is again: https://news.mayocliniclabs.com/2017/08/14/prostate-health-index-phi-prostate-cancer-risk-assessment-hot-topic/. Best, Richard (Team Member)
