PSA test

Had prostate cancer 8 yrs ago the only oncologist wanted me to get PSA test every six months but personal physician doesn't believe in the PSA test so he doesn't schedule it with my annual physical.
My former physician was a partner with my physician and he had the same beliefs and when depart the clinic notified me to see a me to see a ongologist my PSA was 15.2 they found that I stage 4 cancer . After Lupron and 12 weeks of radiation I was cancer free .

  1. Hi . Thank you for your willingness to share your story. I know that there are doctors who have this view of the PSA test and I struggle with that view because, as with any information, it all depends on how one uses it. Over diagnosis and treatment can be a real thing, but the curbing of the use of the PSA test has resulted in a marked increase in late stage prostate cancer diagnoses (see here for example: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/02/health/prostate-cancer-rise-reduced-screening.html). Plus, now there are more tools to help avoid overdiagnosis. Our contributor Dennis did this video on how the MRI can help with this issue: https://prostatecancer.net/video/mri-reducing-overdiagnosis. So glad to hear that your treatment went well. Best, Richard (Team Member)
